When a ticker suddenly appears everywhere, the interesting question is not how many posts there were. It is what shape the posts arrived in.
Organic attention is lumpy
Genuine interest spreads unevenly: a few large accounts, a long tail of small ones, replies that argue with each other, and inter-post intervals that look like human sleep schedules. Coordinated pushes are smoother than that. Near-identical phrasing, accounts created in the same fortnight, posting intervals with suspiciously low variance, and almost no dissent in the replies.
We score those properties separately from volume, and we show both. A spike that is large and organic and a spike that is small and coordinated are different events, and collapsing them into one "social sentiment" number destroys the only useful part.
