We have a rule that costs us a surprising amount of layout: if a term needs a finance degree, the interface is wrong, not the reader.
In practice that means the explanation sits next to the number, in the same visual weight as the label — not behind a tooltip, not in a help centre. Duration, drawdown, and sector weight all get a clause, every time they appear.
Explain, don't credential.
The experienced investor loses nothing: a clause is easy to skim past. The 401(k) holder gains the ability to use the product unaided, which is the only test that matters.
